Can i redeem an iTunes gift card so that it just adds on to another amount from another gift card?

I have another gift card on my iTunes account that still has a bit of money on it. However, in the past whenever I have tried to redeem a new iTunes card the money from the old card seems to be deleted.
Is there a way to avoid this?
