I received an American Express gift card for Christmas, and I’d rather have the money to put into savings. I don’t want the hassle of trading it or selling it online. If my grocery store accepts American Express, can I buy a cheap item and request cash back during the transaction? Seems like an easy way to turn this type of gift card into cash.

No, you will not be able to get cash back. Maggie G

It’s really hard to find a store that will do that. You have to ask them ahead of time and the when you do you’ll be sure to raise some eyebrows and then they will be hesitant.

It’s pretty much up to them.

You should use it the way you would normally use cash. Just use it at Mc Donalds, the gap, the supermarket as you would normally have to and use the cash you would have spent on these purchases towards what you really want to get. pula

Each store has its own policy. If you have money on the card, then it is legal to take the money out at a store. Stop by the Customer Service desk on your way into the store.
Or you can sell a $100 card to a friend for $80 cash.. Ed Atun
