If i use an old navy gift card & my debit card to make a purchase then make return will put it back on debit?

I am lord voldermort asked:

If i use an old navy gift card & my debit card to make a purchase (ex I spend $50.00 gist card is worth $40.00 pay $10.00 on debit card) then make return of everything will old navy put it back on debit card? Or will they just give me store credit/gift card? Is there any way to get cash out of my gift cards without selling them on criagslist?

    Use the gift card first, pay the remainder of the balance with your debit card.

    Turn around and bring back the merchandise showing the receipt that has your debit card as final payment and get them to put it back onto your card, then wait until the refund is safely deposited into your bank account (may take up to 5 days…) and now you can spend the cash.

    That won’t work. The registers are programmed to know exactly how much you spent out of your bank account and how much was on a gift card. It will refund it back the exact way you paid it… akakizzy
