Is it tacky to give my girlfriend a gift card?

Drunken Pirate asked:

She’s turning 21 tomorrow and I’m thinking about getting her a gift card to Beverages & More. I know she’ll be wanting to pick up some booze, so why not treat her to her first few bottles? Would this be tacky? (I’ll be getting a few other small things as well.)

you want to get her drunk?i don’t think that would be such a lovely thing. what stores does she like? give her a gift card to Starbucks or The Mall or some clothing store she likes. giving her a gift card for booze???? i don’t know i wouldn’t like it. unless she’s the type that to be wild. ~*Honest Blunt Opinioner*~

I think it’s tacky, even though alcohol clearly plays an important part in your life, Drunken Pirate.

Your ulterior motive is so transparent: she will buy the booze that YOU will drink. “I’LL be getting a few other small things as well” would be much more convincing if you wrote “SHE’LL be getting a few other small things as well.” Some gift giver. Come on, Dude.

Why not man up and go out and get the girl a proper gift to open. Then, if you must enable her drinking, present the card.

Gift cards are best as spontaneous gifts. 3xAdream

This gift idea of yours is right up there with buying your wife a vacuum cleaner.

Sport out and get her something she can keep forever, little necklace, bracelet or gold/silver earings something along those lines.

    21 is a significant BD.

    Seriously tacky and thoughtless. Pacifica

I say take her out to a bar instead, and as a gift get her something else. The Great Walrus

    not really.
but maybe you could write her a letter explaining how much you care about her. or even a poem, if you feel that creative. just another one
